F is for Flexible, a copy of my February newsletter

Happy February to you!

Wow, what a January.  So much rain and so little electricity (at least if you live in West Marin).  Now, here we are moving into the middle of winter, and while I am enjoying the mildness of the weather, I feel kind of tight in my body.  How about you?

Cool weather, early sunsets, rain, etc… can keep us indoors and not moving too much. WInter temperatures have various effects on our bodies:

  • Blood vessels constrict
  • Breathing becomes shallower
  • Low humidity = dry respiratory tissues
  • Muscles and joints may be tighter and more painful

This doesn’t even touch on the social emotional effects winter has on many people.

With our tight muscles, achy joints and wheezy breathing, we head boldly into the shortest month of the year, together.  For the month of February, F = Flexible!  Or should it be called Flexuary? Whichever…

Our goal will be to find ease of movement in our daily life.  We’ll focus on expanding our range of motion in a safe and supported way.  One thing about tight muscles is that they are almost always weak muscles. To gain flexibility (or really, mobility) we need to make sure we are engaging the muscles while we stretch them. This process also encourages healthy fascia, the spindly web of connective tissue that cradles and connects all of our muscles, organs, blood vessels, nerves, and bones. (Want to geek out on fascia? Here’s a great article to get you started.)

I’m super excited to offer a 4 session beginner yoga workshop.  Right now, there are very few resources for people who are just getting started (or are coming back to yoga after a long hiatus). YouTube and Zoom has its place in yoga, but it really is not the way to go when starting out. Small classes with one on one personalized feedback is so valuable.

4 Session Beginner Yoga Workshop

I’m super excited to offer a 4 session beginner yoga workshop.  Right now, there are very few resources for people who are just getting started (or are coming back to yoga after a long hiatus). YouTube and Zoom has its place in yoga, but it really is not the way to go when starting out. Small classes with one on one personalized feedback is so valuable.

  • foundational poses which you will encounter in most yoga classes
  • build strength and flexibility in a successful way
  • basic alignment principles to protect against injury and support a lifelong practice
  • common yoga terminology
  • how to find a class and teacher that suits you best

This workshop will be held at Yoga & Wellness in San Anselmo on four consecutive Saturdays, Feb 25, March 4, March 11 & March 18.  Classes are from 9:30 to 11AM. Cost for the whole series is only $80! Details Here
